Evaluation of Acer AspireRevo Desktop Personal Computer

This guy is smaller than a net book, and takes up very little space. This computer is perfectly quiet, no fan noise, and works flawlessly. Once every peripheral is USB you are in the clear. This is the way for all desktops to go. A very impressive machine. Not the fastest on the planet, but you can’t beat the simple functionality. If speed is not your principle concern this may be the most economical solution on the market.

I got this to stream and play my HD content for a HTPC. As other users have said, this can play up to 1080p when tweaked just right and using the right software (i.e. 2GB RAM, Windows 7, most recent drivers, etc.)

HOWEVER: It will NOT play protected HD content from iTunes. This is the reason I am not keeping this device. It can stream HD and play wmv HD content beautifully, but if you are planning to rent and buy HD movies from iTunes, you will be sorely disappointed. Most video players like VLC and WMP utilize your GPU to handle the HD. iTunes does not – it relies on your CPU. And with this being an Atom processor, you will have issues with HD. Another factor that I found out makes rented or purchased HD movies from iTunes unwatchable is the DRM. This does something to the processing of the video that makes it extremely difficult to render and unwatchable.

This also means that most likely every other commenter who says this is the *perfect* machine for your HTPC are probably all downloading movies illegally. So if your conscience is ok with breaking the law and stealing movies – this will be just fine. If you’re smarter than that, then look for something more powerful and go the legal route.

Since we use iTunes to legally purchase and rent movies, we ended up going with the Apple TV. It works flawlessly with iTunes content and has many other perks over a full fledged computer.

It was a little nice computer, that comes without the monitor and without the wireless card, the product is very simple and has basically nothing installed. It cost $200 but then you have to add the monitor and the wireless card, and you ended paying almost $400 total, so I returned and bought a real computer, very inexpensive also.
